We have encountered many cases of avascular defects exposing bone and tendon with periosteum and paratenon peeled off among the wounds presented in the field of Plastic Surgery. Of many different methods of covering these wounds, we have used reversed dermal flaps on a rat to experiment with the possibility of covering avascular defects, which developed on the scalp and where it is impossible to use direct closure with skin grafts.
The contraction and existing condition of the flap, the transformation of pilosebaceous units in the buried dermal flap and the joining condition between dermal flap and bone were observed through the light microscope by dividing avascular defects into 3 groups according to their sizes. The results are as follows:
1) Contraction rate of buried dermal flap showed 21% in group I, 27% in group 11 and 26%
